ONLINE SOCIAL CLOWNING – Exploring the clown’s take on personal, social and political issues

with Vivian Gladwell and Ali Stockford

9 July 2020  to 10 September 2020
Each Thursday from 18:00 to 19:30 for 10 sessions

The course offers a practical exploration of the clown’s take on personal, social and political issues.

What is the right way for a clown to reflect, comment and play with the issues and problems they perceive in the world? Unlike the buffoon (a close cousin of the clown but with an attitude problem), the clown is forgiven for stumbling accidentally on truth because they are clearly too stupid to know.

The clown puts the human heart back at the very centre of our lives and of our institutions. In parodying the games of knowledge, power, truth and religion, the clown reveals the light and the shadows of our world and celebrates our humanity.

Course Outline:
Nose to Nose has planned this series of 10 online sessions to run each Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Each session has different themes exploring particular aspects of Social clowning theory. There will be open discussions and practical tasks which will be done in small groups and reviewed in a larger group. The series of 10 sessions is limited to 12 participants.

Each week you will be sent an email containing a session outline and links to the different materials (films, texts etc.) that we will be working with. The course also offers feedback adapted to your level of experience and designed to enable you to progress at your own pace.

Our hope for these sessions is to empower people to do their own project either through devising a clown performance or applying different aspects of clowning in their work or personal lives.

Some example of themes:
What’s in the news – Debates – Social issues – A clown’s take on Films – Documentaries – Virtual visits of museum – Fairy tales – personal stories – Working lives interviews
