MOVEMENT, IMAGINATION AND THE CLOWN – Emerson College – UK
Sunday August 23, 2020 - Friday August 28, 2020
Starts 18:15 on first day - Finishes 14:00 on last day
“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”
A five-day Clown and Movement Improvisation workshop to explore how we move, express and dance our way through the world.
OPEN TO ALL
When we dance we express ourselves. In dance we go straight from our emotions to movement. When we clown we tune in to our inner state and by applying our imagination to emotions we move into play. The clown archetype allows us to be ourselves in the world in a truly creative and playful way.
How do we dance between the contrasting worlds of imagination and being in the here and now? In both Dance and Clowning we need to let go of judgments – of right or wrong – we start to enjoy moving when we are most connected to the way we are in the moment. This course offers a fun and joyful exploration of your expressive self through movement and clowning.
We connect to our playful spirit. We develop and sustain in ourselves and each other the courage to be who we truly are, to trust life and ourselves. We befriend the fears that block us from being fully present in the here and now. The path of the Clown is simple, vulnerable and naive reminding us to dance lightly through life.
Clowning is a state of playfulness that brings us to experience a child-like, naïve and vulnerable state of being. Paradoxically we grow, learn and are strengthened through reconnecting playfully with what makes us most vulnerable. This approach to clowning is not a technique (tricks, gags and routines) but a personal journey towards finding one’s own unique way of being a clown, by listening and being receptive, essential skills for any creative and imaginative expression. It is only when we let go of our control over things that we begin to be surprised by the depth of what reveals itself to us.
How you can move? How can you move with another person? Where does a movement begin and end? Where do these movements want to take you? Dance improvisation asks these questions and then guides you on a path of exploration and discovery into your own dance and creative connection with others.
ABOUT METTLER BASED DANCE
Believing that Dance is a basic human need, Barbara Mettler (1907 – 2002) explored new approaches to both the body as instrument and movement as the material of the Dance. Her way of working emphasised individual and group Improvisation as a means of cultivating the natural, creative movement resources which are in everyone. Mettler’s pioneering research, exploration and practice of large group Dance Improvisation is recognised as a ground breaking and unique contribution to contemporary Dance.
Griff Goehring has taught creative dance to people of all ages and abilities since 1972. She received her training from the American dance pioneer, Barbara Mettler, with whom she studied and worked professionally throughout the 1970s & 80s. Griff directed her own professional groups including the New England Bicycle Dance Troupe in 2011. She was adjunct faculty at Hampshire College from 2006-2017 where she taught Group Dance Improvisation. She co-teaches Mettler Studios annual Summer Teacher Training in Tucson, Arizona, USA. Griff stumbled into the joy of clowning in 2017 when she took her first Nose to Nose workshop. Her travel to UK is funded by Mettler Studios, Inc. (www.barbaramettler.org).
Ali participated in her first Nose to Nose workshop in 2000 and fell in love with the work. She has been facilitating Nose to Nose workshops for five years and holds this work in high esteem as the perfect grounding for all creative work, developing our potential for full self-expression and the bigger picture of trusting ourselves and life. A member of the Nose to Nose Team, UK, Clown facilitation has also taken her into training work for the Giggle Doctors, Theodora Foundation, UK and for Lis’n Tell Speech and Language practitioners UK. Ali speaks both English and French.
