MOVEMENT, IMAGINATION AND THE CLOWN – Emerson College – UK

Lizeth 2

“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”

Friedrich Nietzsche

A five-day Clown and Movement Improvisation workshop to explore how we move, express and dance our way through the world.

OPEN TO ALL

DESCRIPTION

When we dance we express ourselves. In dance we go straight from our emotions to movement. When we clown we tune in to our inner state and by applying our imagination to emotions we move into play. The clown archetype allows us to be ourselves in the world in a truly creative and playful way.

How do we dance between the contrasting worlds of imagination and being in the here and now?   In both Dance and Clowning we need to let go of judgments – of right or wrong – we start to enjoy moving when we are most connected to the way we are in the moment. This course offers a fun and joyful exploration of your expressive self through movement and clowning.

THROUGH CLOWNING

We connect to our playful spirit. We develop and sustain in ourselves and each other the courage to be who we truly are, to trust life and ourselves. We befriend the fears that block us from being fully present in the here and now. The path of the Clown is simple, vulnerable and naive reminding us to dance lightly through life.

Clowning is a state of playfulness that brings us to experience a child-like, naïve and vulnerable state of being. Paradoxically we grow, learn and are strengthened through reconnecting playfully with what makes us most vulnerable. This approach to clowning is not a technique (tricks, gags and routines) but a personal journey towards finding one’s own unique way of being a clown, by listening and being receptive, essential skills for any creative and imaginative expression. It is only when we let go of our control over things that we begin to be surprised by the depth of what reveals itself to us.

METTLER-BASED DANCE:

How you can move? How can you move with another person? Where does a movement begin and end? Where do these movements want to take you? Dance improvisation asks these questions and then guides you on a path of  exploration and discovery into your own dance and creative connection with others.

ABOUT METTLER BASED DANCE

Believing that Dance is a basic human need, Barbara Mettler (1907 – 2002) explored new approaches to both the body as instrument and movement as the material of the Dance. Her way of working emphasised individual and group Improvisation as a means of cultivating the natural, creative movement resources which are in everyone. Mettler’s pioneering research, exploration and practice of large group Dance Improvisation is recognised as a ground breaking and unique contribution to contemporary Dance.
