Mindfulness and the Clown
A playful exploration of Mindfulness and Clowning

Participants in our workshops often express the deep connections they feel between Clowning and Mindfulness.

Clowning invites us to connect lightly and playfully to our emotions without identifying with them, in a non-judgmental way. Clowning also asks us to be powerfully “Present” in the “Here and Now”, to be deeply connected to ourselves, to our partners on stage, the audience and the world.

Breath, listening, stillness and befriending emptiness are all part of how Clowns reveal themselves to us.

In his autobiography Mickael Chekhov (who briefly worked as a clown) describes how he truly came to understand clowning when he saw himself playing himself – a witnessing presence to himself.

Charles Marowitz in his biography of Chekhov continues:

“The actor and the role are both divided and united, and, as if through the lens of a movie camera, he pans easily from his inner state to his outer being. In this condition, as Chekhov attests, things happen that were never planned, never rehearsed.”

The Other Chekhov: A Biography of Michael Chekhov, the Legendary Actor By Charles Marowitz

This workshop will consists of moments of Mindful meditation (introducing beginners to its principles) and moments of playful discovery of our clown.

Complete beginners in both Clowning and Mindfulness are welcome.
