A Weekend introduction to Reimagining the World Through Play
This weekend workshop brings together the principles of Doughnut Economics and the practice of social clowning.
Doughnut Economics asks one of the great questions of our time: how can we create a world in which everyone has enough to live well, without pushing the planet beyond its limits? Clowning brings another kind of intelligence to this question — embodied, relational, imaginative and full of surprise.
Over the weekend, we will explore some of the seven ways of thinking like a 21st-century economist through clowning, movement, improvisation, archetype and performance. We will not approach these ideas as experts. We will let go of needing to know, explain or persuade. Instead, we will begin from clown ground: presence, listening, openness, vulnerability and the pleasure of being changed by what happens.
This workshop is suitable for people with or without clowning experience, and for people with or without prior knowledge of Doughnut Economics. It will be especially relevant for artists, educators, facilitators, activists, community workers, sustainability practitioners and anyone looking for a more joyful way to engage with the challenges of our time.

Kate Raworth
Kate Raworth (sounds like ‘Ray-worth’) is a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab.
Her internationally best-selling book Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist has been translated into over 20 languages and has been widely influential with diverse audiences, from the UN General Assembly to Pope Francis to Extinction Rebellion.
Kate is a Senior Teaching Fellow at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
Over the past 25 years, Kate’s career has taken her from working with micro-entrepreneurs in the villages of Zanzibar to co-authoring the Human Development Report for UNDP in New York, followed by a decade as Senior Researcher at Oxfam.
She holds a first class BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and an MSc in Economics for Development, both from Oxford University. She has been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of York, University College Dublin, KU Leuven, and Business School Lausanne. She is also a member of the Club of Rome and Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of the Arts.
Kate has written extensively for media including The Guardian, The New Statesman, Newsweek.com, and Wired.com, and has contributed to many radio programmes including for BBC Radio 4, The World Service, ABC and NPR, as well as television including CNN World News, Al-Jazeera, BBC, ITV and CBC. Her 2018 TED talk has over 5 million views.
Vivian Gladwell
Vivian is the founder and director of Nose to Nose and has given hundreds of workshops around the world. He lives both in the UK and France where he started clowning in 1978. He speaks French and English fluently.
Vivian began teaching in 1988 as part of the Lifeways Festival at Emerson College – UK. He trained as a facilitator with the Bataclown in 1990 and joined their team in 1991 also working as a modern day Court Jester (Clownanalyst).
He created Nose to Nose UK in 1990, Nose to Nose of North America in 2006 and Fool View, the Social Clowning group and has trained facilitators in the UK, the USA, Germany and Italy – view history.
He continues his role as ambassador for the work by researching the applications of clowning in the context of teacher training, medicine, conflict management, ecology and intercultural work in many countries (South Africa, USA, Senegal, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Italy, Germany, Norway…) He holds clowning as a social playground for exploring our humanity.
