INTRODUCTION TO CLOWNING – WEEKEND, LIVERPOOL, UK

flyingwith John Lawlor and Ali Stockford

Clowning is a state of playfulness that brings us to experience a child-like, naïve and vulnerable state of being. Paradoxically we grow, learn and are strengthened through reconnecting playfully with what makes us most vulnerable. This approach to clowning is not a technique (tricks, gags and routines) but a personal journey towards finding one’s own unique way of being a clown, by listening and being receptive, essential skills for any creative and imaginative expression. It is only when we let go our control over things that we begin to be surprised by the depth of what reveals itself to us. Come for a weekend of letting go and freeing up!

The group is limited to 12

Facilitators:

John Lawlor

I have a degree in Theatre from Dartington College of Arts and taught Drama for Westminster Adult Education Service for several years.  I also ran a local drama group, Absent Friends, in South London. I discovered clowning in 2012 and have participated in clown courses with ‘Nose to Nose’ since that time.  In 2023, I successfully completed the Nose to Nose Clown Facilitator Training.  I am also a member of the London based clowning group, ‘Nobody Nose’.  Thus, I have acquired a strong understanding of the work, possess oodles of enthusiasm for clowning and the ability to create a safe environment in which people can take creative risks.

Alison Stockford

Ali participated in her first Nose to Nose workshop in 2002 and fell in love with the work. Since training Ali has been facilitating workshops with Nose to Nose since 2016. She holds this work in high esteem as a perfect grounding for all creative work and the bigger picture of trusting ourselves and life. Alison is a qualified and experienced teacher of over 25 years having delivered Performing Arts workshops in mainstream and special schools and older peoples settings. Dancing since the age of four she is drawn to facilitating how others explore the dimension of movement in their clown.
Performing experience includes: tap dancing and comedy in café-théâtre with Les Amuses Gueules Lille, France; Street Theatre and Theatre in Education with Inside Out Theatre Company, Hastings. In recent work for Nose to Nose, Ali has delivered trainings for the Giggle Doctors – Theodora Foundation, Lis’n Tell Speech and Language Practitioners, Quantum Marketing, London, medical students at the University of Bristol and social clowning at The Imaginarium,  a writers conference, Cambridge.  Ali speaks both English and French.
