HOLDING THE CENTRE IN THE STORM – AN ONLINE WORKSHOP

A playful (and chaotic) exploration, through clowning and storytelling, of this moment in history

with Vivian Gladwell and Ashley Ramsden

“In the Beginning there was chaos”

Such is the opening of many creation myths. We are living in a mythic time, a time of re-creation, a time when we have more time on our hands than we’ve ever had, a time when we will either reshape how we live or be shaped by outer circumstances. Whose voices are you listening to? Whose thoughts are you thinking? How are you holding your centre?

Both storytelling and clowning have practices and wisdom to offer.

If the storyteller holds the patterns for the past and the promises of the future, clowns are always at the beginning, knowing nothing and everything, creating the world out of whatever comes their way.

How can both these archetypes honour, challenge and re-invent the world around us ?

WHAT WE WILL DO TOGETHER
The course will run on Tuesdays: every Tuesday over 5 weeks will consist of 2 sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon).

Each session will have different themes exploring particular aspects of clowning and storytelling. There will be open discussions and practical tasks which will be done in small groups and reviewed in a larger group

Every Tuesday will end with a project to be done in pairs for the following week.

We will also give you links to the different materials (films, texts etc.) that we will be working with.

Our hope for this work together will be to playfully offer you practices to stay more present for whatever these times may bring. It might also empower you to do your own projects and (either individually or collaboratively) to devise a clown or storytelling performance, applying different aspects of these art forms in your work or personal life.

No previous experience in either storytelling or clowning necessary.
