HEALTHCARE CLOWNING – exploring the clown’s role in a medical environment – Emerson, UK

with Vivian Gladwell and Joy Winistörfer

The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.

Working in a healthcare environment such as a hospital or a medical institution, clowns require skills such as: empathy and sensitivity to people’s space, communicating without words, moving with ease through charged emotional situations and staying connected with heart whilst assessing the needs of the situation.

As clowns we connect to patients, their family, the medical staff, our clown partner and ourselves. These connections are the ground out of which our work grows. In a medical environment our audience often have to cope with their own fragility and questions.

Our responsibility requires us to learn how to better listen and connect in moments of pain or stress.

This course offers an introduction to healthcare clowning and is for anyone who has begun or is already on this journey.

The group is limited to 12

PRE-REQUISITE: This course requires participants to have some experience of clowning.

Facilitator:

Joy Winistörfer

Joy

Since 2005 Joy has worked with the Theodora foundation in Switzerland both as a hospital clown and also coaching future hospital clowns. She most recently ran a workshop at the international healthcare congress in Lisbon. She also works with the foundation Lebensfreude an organisation that cares for people with dementia.

As a child in Switzerland, Joy fell in love with theatre. Her love of clowning began after watching the famous Swiss clown “Grock” in a black and white film. She learned Tango, travelled to Paris and Buenos Aires, and has been exploring comedy and drama following her passion for clowning and tango.
