6 day residential – exploring language & silence
Taught in English

The workshops that Paul offers are a subtle mixture of playful and profound, individual and in between. They can include simple exercises in movement through which the powers and gestures of language are revealed.

This is the first time we are offering a week-long course of clowning and writing creatively in which we will explore the spaces between words and the articulations of silence.

Lost for words, we listen – to leaves rustling, to the next person we meet, invite Hermes/Mercury (the divine trickster) into our circle or call for the nine Muses of epic, lyric and dramatic poetry to inspire us.

If no words come we will play and weep over our blank pages. This, anyway is the practice of both clown and poet – to start with nothing, and trust the momentum of each moment.

This course may be of special interest to writers, poets, teachers, therapists, actors, and anyone who hopes to discover more about the role of play in their lives.

Beginners and the more experienced are equally welcome.

Art breaks the sea that’s frozen inside us. It reminds us of sensitivities that we might have lost at some cost.” Kafka

Paul Matthews
Paul MatthewsPAUL MATTHEWS worked for many years as lecturer, gymnast and resident poet at Emerson College in Forest Row, East Sussex, U.K. In his student days at Sussex University he edited the poetry magazine, Eleventh Finger with Paul Evans and made contact with the lively poetry scene of the time, including the American poet Robert Duncan who particularly inspired him. His writing continues to appear in literary journals and anthologies, The Ground that Love Seeks (Five Seasons Press) being a gathering of his poetry. He travels widely, speaking his poems, and giving talks and workshops on a range of subjects.

Working first as a teacher of children, and then of adults, his interests opened into a wider concern for the life of language in home, classroom, workplace and everyday relationships. His two books, Sing Me the Creation and Words in Place(published by Hawthorn Press) are the fruit of that research. In them he combines the craft of writing with ‘spells’ for the freeing and schooling of imagination. The longer courses in Creative Writing that he (with colleagues) offered at Emerson College  included movement, speech, singing, drawing and nature observation. He continues to contribute to the School of Storytelling which is based there.
One of Paul’s urgent concerns is for children to meet living language and imagination in the classroom. He is a trained Steiner/Waldorf Teacher and his earlier work with young people informs what he does world wide with those studying to be educators. On his travels he is invited into schools to work with teachers, children and parents. See Paul Matthews’ website
