Inter-cultural Clowning in India
5-11th September 2011
Bhaja Retreat Centre (near Pune, Maharashtra)
Held in the stunningly lush surroundings of rural Maharashtra
here is a unique opportunity to explore what makes us laugh - in
co-operation with performers and story-tellers from India. This
5-day workshop concludes with a performance in a local village...
An exploration of our cultural differences around laughter and
play, and the clown as expressed in Eastern and Western culture.
The research will span diverse worlds, backgrounds and cultural
traditions.
Half the group will consist of Indian performers, who are social
activists in their communities, using drama, storytelling and the
arts to raise consciousness. Often coming from poor backgrounds
themselves, they mostly work supporting people in remote villages
and slums.
The other half will be from Europe and the USA, preferably with
some experience of clowning and/or performance.
Spaces are strictly limited to 10 from India and 10 from the West,
so early booking is recommended!
Facilitators: Vivian Gladwell and Jaya Hartlein.
