So, how do we learn how to speak? Elementary Watson! We learn to speak by listening to the world around us. At an early age we learn how to speak through playing simple games that gradually became more and more difficult. One of the first games common to many cultures is peek-a-boo (coo-coo) and after there are many more games that are commonly played by all children. We have all discovered the world through play.

Playing continues as children grow, meet others and begin to negotiate, often through play acting; “I’ll be the mother and you are the little girl that…”. Then at a certain point children begin to go to school and learning becomes more and more structured; teachers encourage you to think, plan and program. Friedrich Schiller, a German philosopher and poet, tells us that reasoning and emotions are closely linked together and that the combination of the two is responsabile for permanent learning, a holistic learning through the senses. Schiller’s maximum states that the human being is most fully a human being when he or she plays. So why sit still behind a desk and try to learn?

Speaking English through the Eyes of the Clown is a workshop that will allow you to put your basic English into fluency and enrichen not only your verbal skills but also your physical and emotional self expression. As adults we find it difficult and useless to play but “play” is a fundamental principle of learning about relationships.

The clown reminds us how to simplify things and to learn through play. There have always been  games and rules to playing, now at an adult age, the clown takes us to a world that shows us how to ignore  conventions that society expects from you.

It’s all about the freedom of play, negotiation and how we live in the world.
